Excuse the clunky phrasing. Just interested in finding out more about Olympians who also apply their intelligence towards other, perhaps more academic(?), pursuits. I’ll add that I think what’s incredible about those two in particular is that they both seem so well grounded and well adjusted, at least from what I’ve seen in interviews.
Bryony Page the British trampoline champion has a first-class degree and Honourary doctorate from the university of Sheffield. Her dissertation was about the sounds dinosaurs made.
Wait, what sounds did dinosaurs make??
Was there something other than “rawr”?
Not to be that guy a bachelor level dissertation isn’t that special. World apart from a real PhD. The doctorate is honorary as you pointed out.
From her official Olympics page.
Graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Sheffield (GBR) where her dissertation was a study of sounds made by dinosaurs.
Awarded an honorary doctorate in 2023 from the University of Sheffield for giving distinguished service or bringing distinction to the University, the City of Sheffield, or the region.
She gets bonus points for living every 6 year old’s dream. Seriously Olympics for trampoline and a scientist studying sounds dinosaurs made? Only people who can compete are race car drivers and astronauts.
No but she is still in the top percentage of bachelor level graduates and dinosaurs are just cool.
The Klitschko brothers have a PhD
Nic Fink. He also works full-time as an engineer.
Vivian Kong - the Hong Kong fencing gold medallist is studying for a doctorate at the Chinese University of Hong Kong
Technically she’s studying a JD, Juris Doctor, or a law degree. Not really a doctorate in a PhD sense, but impressive nonetheless.
Michelle Alozie who plays soccer for Nigeria, has a degree in molecular biology and works as a cancer research tech when she’s not playing pro soccer
Naomi Girma on the USWNT went to Stanford, along with Sophia Smith. Girma though is arguably the best center back in the world and such a smart player.
Australian javelin thrower Mackenzie Little has an MD, and according to the Olympic broadcast, she works as a GP in Australia.
Amy Chow from the Magnificent 7 is a pediatrician. Kim Bui (Germany) was getting her Master’s in technical biology while competing. Andreea Răducan (România) has a master’s degree in journalism. Lisa Leveille (Canada, 2000) has a PhD in neuroscience and an MD.
Had not heard Amy’s name in forever. Glad to know she is apparently doing very well!
Don’t know if you count old Olympians but Alexander Karelin, considered the greatest mat wrestler, is known for having interest in poetry, art and music, he also has a law degree and he is now a politician, pretty brainy if you ask me.
All of them, I’m pretty sure. You don’t get to be an olympian without being the peak of humanity in every way. Remember these are the people who would have been kings and emperors a thousand years ago.
Antoine Dupont has a 5 year diploma in sport management.
One of my colleagues was a silver medalist in water polo 16 and 12 years ago
He went to Stanford both as an undergrad and for his MBA - and went to work in corporate companies as an exec after his second silver medal
Pretty impressive guy
Most of the British rowers go to either Oxford or Cambridge.
