According to Jason Timpf:

  • The Lakers took 34 C&S jump shots last night and 27 of them were “guarded” according to Synergy.

  • 64% of their C&S jumpers have been guarded so far in preseason, compared to 49% in the regular season last year.

  • Last night they got just 0.85 pps on those attempts, and are at 0.82 for the preseason in total.

The system might be better on paper, but it has consistently created much worse results in practice than Darvin Ham’s offensive scheme.

Feels like every year people are lending more and more weight to the preseason that they shouldn’t. Coaches are literally running out test players who won’t ever see a regular season court, messing around with schemes, and just getting to know their teams.

The preseason has some fun moments and is great practice for players but it ultimately tells very little about where a team will end up or even be a few weeks into the season.

Sweeping judgements about a brand new coach and system after a couple pre season games is just idiotic. You guys can’t be serious

That’s a worthless stat until we get 15-20 games into the actual regular season. If the offense isn’t getting many open looks by that time then they can start to be concerned. For now there should be zero concern

Drawing conclusions about the regular season based off 4 pre-season games sure is a choice.

OP stating 'consistently created much worse results" while quoting fking 34 possessions… how dumb can we truly get in this subreddit?

Clearly we have to look at the last preseason to compare results. Last preseason they were 2-4 with a -6.7 point differential, this season they are 1-3 so far with a -7.5 point differential. Seasons before that, 1-5 with -16.3, and 0-6 with -15.

There is a definite trend here, the worse they do in the preseason the better the team does during regular season. By that metric JJ is an improvement over Ham.

Too early to say anything. Lebron hasn’t played much and he plays a big part in getting open looks

He claims “less open jumpers” but gives a percentage, not a number. If they are taking more jumpers than last year, it would make sense that they are taking more contested shots and the % would go down even if they take the exact same number of open ones.

Just giving the % doesn’t prove that.
