According to Jason Timpf:

  • The Lakers took 34 C&S jump shots last night and 27 of them were “guarded” according to Synergy.

  • 64% of their C&S jumpers have been guarded so far in preseason, compared to 49% in the regular season last year.

  • Last night they got just 0.85 pps on those attempts, and are at 0.82 for the preseason in total.

The system might be better on paper, but it has consistently created much worse results in practice than Darvin Ham’s offensive scheme.

Feels like every year people are lending more and more weight to the preseason that they shouldn’t. Coaches are literally running out test players who won’t ever see a regular season court, messing around with schemes, and just getting to know their teams.

The preseason has some fun moments and is great practice for players but it ultimately tells very little about where a team will end up or even be a few weeks into the season.
