Don’t know why shooting (firearms or bow) isn’t like some equestrian events and has just one mixed category.
It used to be mixed but men took 23/24 qualifier spots in 1992 and women pressured it to be separated so they had a better chance of winning. Now that women have improved, it’s a conversation to be had, but eliminating half the participants would be shocking to the athletes
A lot of sports or events like chess were separated by gender to encourage more women to enter. It created a safer space for women within a women’s league
There are many reasons why women perform better. Some say it’s the jackets, others say it’s anatomy. But it’s not surprising in shooting where precision is more important than strength.
Jackets? Why would they say that?
Shooters in some events wear special weighted jackets to aid in minimising movement and sway. Maybe women benefit more from it for some reason. Maybe there’s something about the general male vs female body type that means women end up with more stability. No idea tbh lol.
The explanation after the winter games was that women could control heart rate and breathing better than men therefore they were more stable/stationary than men. So similar reasoning in minimizing the movement.
Women are generally considered better shots on the whole. It’s one of the few sports in which women seem to have a physical advantage. I don’t know if there is an agreed upon explanation, but I’ve seen as possible explanation that women tend to have better fine motor skills, women’s bodies generally have a lower point of gravity or that women have better static vision, while men are better at tracking moving targets.
Women are better in rifle but not pistol. In rifle shorter people with wider hips have an advantage. In pistol the gun weighs 1.1 pounds and men have a higher grip strength which enables them to use a lower percentage of their strength
The way it has been explained to me is that women’s hip angle provide a more stable “locked in” stance (like seen in the photo in the link below). However, This isn’t the same general hip position typically used in pistol, or tactical shooting so that may help explain why women tend to shoot better in rifle. I think there is also evidence that women have better dexterity which may translate to better trigger control (speculation).

In pistol, your hand is almost completely relaxed. Using “strength” is bad… “stamina” is a better word, but even a child can train for the stamina needed. In pistol, there is no advantage for either gender.
Yes, in rifle, it is considered that women have a slight advantage because hips, center of gravity, and flexibility(this one can be gained by men but lot never work on it…I was part of the lot)
Growing up, girls and boys were never separated, we are all equal shooters.
Of course, I am only talking about target shooting.
Source, did air pistol, smallbore pistol, smallbore rifle, and other disciplines, was couched by an Olympic couch, competed growing up against those who eventually went to the Olympics and won lot on state and national level, and was a couch briefly.
Short men should perform well if it was about lower point of gravity. Women having better static vision makes more sense but is it always like this or only on this Olympics we got to see women out performing?
How do you not understand that the lower center of gravity in women means specifically that the majority of the weight is distributed in the hips and legs? A short man would still typically have an equal to higher center of gravity on average.
It just seems like you’re trying to discount the center of gravity point by intentionally misrepresenting it. Comes off super disingenuous.
Women are slightly better than men in rifle shooting. Men are slightly better at pistol and skeet shooting. But this year looks like the women were slightly better in pistol and men slightly better in rifle
I wouldn’t use the word slightly in the game of precision cause that’s literally what counts to become medalist.
In 10m pistol, men have historically scored higher than women. This year is not the norm. Using this olympic example is not sufficient to claim men wouldn’t medal in the event. Just like this year men scored higher in rifle, but historically women are better
Now let’s do track and football.
Why?
240.9>221.7
Which different protocols? Not a single commenter has clarified that yet.
if it exists the advantage in skeet shooting is small enough for women to win as skeet was a mixed event until in '92 a woman actually won gold and the shooting federation bigshots bruised their ego
The committee made the decision in December 1991 and April 1992. The Olympics were in July 1992. 23/24 qualifiers were men. The winner at the time was surprisingly the woman. The women wanted to separate it for a better chance to win. Do that you will with that information and make your judgments then
I remember the explanation being it had to do with slower heart rate and breathing led to a steadier hand. Made sense so I didn’t question.
On average shorter arms should help too right? Less drift because shorter
That makes sense
That’s fascinating given esports is predominately male. However I am aware young males likely are gaming more than their female counterparts for whatever reason.
This is actually kinda fascinating.
This can be misleading, not sure if it is though. For example,in archery there were some women with more points than men, but that was because they competed in more rounds. When you looked at the average score per shot, the men were generally higher. Not sure how shooting score works though
Men take 60 shots within 75 minutes. Women take 40 shots within 50 minutes. As men have to take more shots, it’s possible this lowers their average as it’s tougher to keep consistency over more shots and longer time.
That’s completely false. The rules are same for women and men in the 10m and 50m events.
Okay, thanks. This is what I was asking, if there is separate rules and my speculations were true cause I was like how come women outperform men in every shooting event:
Yes. It takes us commenters 100 replies to even address the question.
Jup, we’re not looking at the same events, so direct comparisons are moot.
Why when have separate events
I don’t know if I would go that far with the sport counting decimals when you get to the 10 ring. The women had more 10.5 plus vs the men having say 10.2
They use decimals in the finals. Other than 10m air rifle, all pistol and rifle events use integer scoring during qualifications.
I looked it up and yes women are slightly better at 10m rifle shooting and men are slightly better at skeet and pistol shooting. The only event where it is only a mixed event is Equestrian but males usually win 2/3 of medals. But this might be due to opportunity
Nah they changed that in 2018. Men and women take the same amount of shots now
Oh wow, is it same in rifle shooting and every other shooting events? I might need to look at official Olympics protocols, now that I am intrigued
Why are men and women’s shooting separate at the Olympics? Shouldn’t it be mixed gender like F1 as there’s no strength element?
There literaly is a mixed category. Mikec + Arunovic vs Dikec (no gear hitman) + other girl, gold medal match.
Mixed cat isnt the same as just sending the best from each country
It was actually mixed but women started to dominate and they got seperated.
Women pushed for it to be separated after men won 23/24 qualifier spots in 1992. Why do you spread misinformation? It was pushed BEFORE she even won
Women pushed for it to be separated

It was decided just a few months before the 1992 olympics*, but two years after(!) Zhang started dominating skeet.
*despite protests from the female president of the Canadian International Trapshooters Association, Susan Nattrass
Last time shooting had a mixed shooting category in the olympics, a woman won. They subsequently banned women from the event (and much later, opened a female category)
https://olympics.com/en/news/zhang-shan-the-only-female-shooter-to-win-gold-in-a-mixed-competition
I think that answers the question?
Also a shout out to Margeret Murdock who was the first to medal in shooting in a mixed competition (she tied for gold, but lost on some tiebreaker), and held multiple records for men and women. https://olympics.com/en/athletes/margaret-thompson-murdock
Eh. I don’t believe in such agenda driven narrative. It makes literally no sense. Correlation isn’t causation. They they banned it to increase number of events and secure more overall medals.
Shooting is one sport that should be all gender equal.
Ban equestrian sports. Cruelty-free #LA28

The famous thread full of male pseudo-scientists. Listen guys: this is not because there is a question that you must have an explanation… since you just are random people.
They are better, period.
