  • I wouldn’t even say that. Antawn Jamison was a better offensive player than Dennis Rodman, but much less valuable. It’s not just a simple question of whether offense or defense is worth more. It’s a matter of degrees. Someone like Curry isn’t just a good offensive player. He is a total anomaly, who shoots at unprecedented volume and accuracy.

Defensive players can impact the game in a similar way. Wemby has the potential to be anti-gravity in that sense. His mere presence on the court can influence the spacing and shot selection, so in that regard he is “defending the ball each defense.” Tyson Chandler and Marcus Camby didn’t do that, even though they had similar defensive qualities. Wemby is that archetype taken to an unseen level.

Any core skill done at an outlier level is going to be very valuable. That’s why you take a Rodman over a Jamison or a Curry over a Bam. Being very good at something is not the same as being a 1/1 at something.

  • Nothing borderline about Jrue if Team USA wins gold again. Go check the list of guys with multiple basketball gold medals. It’s an elite company…and Deron Williams. Jrue will get in. In terms of notoriety, he is just peaking late.

Love will get in because of his Minnesota stuff, the ring in Cleveland, and the Olympic gold. It’s enough. Opposite of Jrue. His rep peaked early.

For me, DeMar, John Wall, and Kemba Walker are Hall of Very Good. Those are probably the best guys who I don’t think should get in.

  • Reality is that the league is much tougher and more competitive than it was back then. There were like 23 teams in the whole league at the start of Magic’s NBA career, and no foreign superstars really until the 00s.

I have MJ as my GOAT and am old enough to have seen him play live with the Bulls in-person. At the same time, I can admit that the level of competition has gotten much higher.

It’s an argument in favor of the current generation of LeBron and Curry being underrated all-time. They got 4 rings in an absolutely cutthroat era of the league. It’s only getting tougher and tougher.
