I’m a Spurs fan, so I have Wemby winning DPOY this season, but I can’t help but think that if the Spurs don’t improve record wise, or defensively as a whole, he could lose out. Maybe there has been some talk about this that I haven’t seen, but does anyone have Chet winning it? They will likely have an amazing record, and be at or near the top defensively. The only thing I could see is that the team as a whole will be so good defensively that one player may not stick out. Thoughts?

No because everything Chet does on defense, Wemby does it much better.

It’s already been decided that Wemby is gonna win it.

If the Lakers get a top seed I’m assuming most of the other teams in the league disbanded or perished in terrible accidents. So yeah AD would be a lock.

Chet’s defensive reputation lagging behind his ability and metrics right now for whatever reason so probably not

We would have to be like the best defense by all metrics for that to happen. I feel as though Wemby or Rudy win it this season

Wemby + narrative means he doesn’t have a chance, but I do expect he’s gonna be real good this year.

For some reason Shai got some DPOY votes last season while Chet did not, so I guess the narrative is not there.

No reason to suspect he would even be better than Wemby let alone DPOY.

Wemby came 2nd in DPOY last season and led the league in blocks as a rookie. He is beyond disturbing on that end of the floor.

I remember watching him early in the season and just seeing the sheer space he’d cover to at least pester a shot if not outright block it, and I’m talking at some serious distance away. And at the time I was obviously impressed but I also just thought, well, they’re just really not used to this guy’s ridiculous length and athleticism. But it never changed, he was still tormenting people near the end of the season, covering distance that seems impossible.

And his instincts are already so good there. I have to imagine it’s gotta be him.

Sure, he shouldve been top 5 last year (his reputation lags behind the results because of Wemby) and he will be better this year on likely all time great defense

This reminds me of the Shaq v Alonso Mourning comparisons. We’ve seen them both, we know how this goes lol.

Fairly or not I think OKC is viewed to have too much defensive talent, like other then Isaiah Joe basically every single one of the guys in their projected rotation is somewhere between good and all defense talent with enough minutes

Caruso will unironically compete with him for vote share. Even Hartenstein and Dort are there. Though personally I think this Thunder defense has insane defensive potential. They’ll be the best defense in the league next season imo. Caruso, Dort, Chet, Hart is too much. Shai as your weakest starting defender is crazy. Not even mentioning Jdub. Maybe he gets it if he chases enough stocks.

No chance, I don’t even think he’d be the first to win it on his own team
