Title basically.

We already know LA chose baseball, now I wonder who’s gonna win the most medals lol.

Why didn’t France choose something like petanque ?

Assuming they play one off games, any one of 4/5 countries could realistically win. Its a game with a ton of randomness baked in.

They wanted something a « street sport, for young people, easy to share on social networks ».

They chose it because France has a legendary breaking scene with some of the most influential competitors and crews in the form.

France already hosted several of the major bboying showcases and competitions every year. It is quite literally a part of Parisian culture.

France is probably more the world epicenter for petanque than for breaking. Having invented the sport in its modern form, and having won 57 world titles.

Epicenter of street dance forms in general, not breaking specifically.

Battle of the Year (Montpelier), Juste Debout, Fusion Concept are all hosted in France annually. The most recent BC One was hosted in Paris. Les Twins, Stephane Deheselle, Criminalz, Yudat, Vagabonds, etc, are all French names known all around the world and not just within dance either. Both things can be true anyway.

The additions are so much better now that I know it pisses other countries off so much.

Wild to me that people don’t view the Olympics as a place to learn about sports they aren’t familiar with

I think you are overestimating the US’s Olympic baseball prowess and underestimating other baseball playing countries (Japan, Cuba, Canada, Dominican Republic, South Korea, Taiwan). In the six previous games with Baseball, the US only has a single gold medal and didn’t even qualify one year.

Yea, I doubt any MLB players will be playing, which obviously would help other countries as much as the US.

Softball and Lacrosse were most likely picked to help the US, except the US dominates everyone in Field Lacrosse and the Olympics will only be 6 man Lacrosse, afaik, which the US doesn’t dominate

I think they will have MLB players play. If they don’t Japan and Korea would be odds on favorites though.

Only because sports that the US is actually good at happen to be a lot of sports the ioc would never approve.

It’s probably not the right answer but the appropriate answer would be “Because it’s not the Olympics spirit and sports shouldn’t be pick so the country wins medals” . That being said, Rio would love to pick Futsal and Beach Football but FIFA and COI don’t like each so no deal.

i think they have to choose something that enough other countries participate in. i’m not certain how many other countries play pentanque

having said that, it looks a lot like lawn bowling which has been in the commonwealth games for years

Pétanques was proposed but there is no world federation and the rule of the IOC is that a sport must have a worldwide governing body.

I read it was because breaking would encompass both the athletic features of a sport and the artistic features of an expressive art. Very French way to see it.
