Hello, my law firm presented our proposal to the NBA to restructure the league to a promotion / relegation format. The NBA rejected it. This Dropbox Link contains a copy of the proposal and our communications with the lawyers and executives of the NBA and NBPA. Below are the main points.

  • Divide NBA into two leagues (League One and League Two)
  • Bottom 4 teams of League One are relegated
  • Remaining 4 teams in League Two Playoffs are promoted
  • Champion of League Two wins the “Kobe Cup”
  • Winner of the “Kobe Cup” gets the second highest percentage of the Draft Lottery
  • Single elimination, mid-season tournament called the “Misaka Tournament”, consisting of teams from League One and League Two, winner gets the 16th pick of the Draft in addition to their other first-round pick
  • Immediate expansion as both leagues can have 20 teams
  • Multiple broadcasting right deals: (i) League One, (ii) League Two, (iii) Misaka Tournament
  • Revenue generated from League One and League Two will be shared equally among all teams as under the CBA

Any questions, please contact me at 212-202-0056 or [email protected].

Thank you.

Pedro

This won’t work because the core tenet of the league is all owners will make money regardless of how well the team does that season.

Donald Sterling would have loved this system - he could field a terrible league 2 team and still get equal money as the top teams?

The youth development structure in Europe is conducive to a promotion and relegation system.

The collegiate and draft system in North America essentially prohibits this.

We’d be looking at a nation-wide restructuring of youth basketball at every age level.

I read a decent amount of your proposal document I appreciate all the work and thought you put into this.

It’s a nice idea but the obvious issue is that you’ll never get buy-in from either the owners or the players association since they would never wish to be a part of a “lower league”.

What are your current plans? Now that the NBA has rejected it.

Wierd that there are so many downvotes here when i read daily here that nba regular season can be boring to many… that fiba rules and overall presentation where game lasts 2 hours are refreshing for basketball enjoyement.
