I tried doing this when I coached high school ball and a player said I was racist and was treating him like a dog. My love of coaching was ruined just because a player kept getting lost in a drill so I helped him move to the correct spots and was bumping him. It’s a physical sport and I got humiliated in front of my players and some parents.

If that’s how they respond to their own damn coach trying to put them in the right spot, then they are WAY too soft for any type of physicality.

Maybe they should try Golf. Or Tennis. Or Disc Golf.

He was a bad student and I even had him on the team to help him stay out of trouble. I felt bad for him and was super supportive and tried to bring him structure. Then at one instance of me guiding him by using his shoulders to point him in the right direction I was brought down to being a racist and treating him like a dog. I was so embarrassed and also upset. The other players backed me up and thought it was unnecessary but now I had this sign on my back that I a white coach was rough on a black kid.

I’m sorry you had to deal with it. This is why some coaches put up a “tough guy” persona, it reduces the chances of players openly disrespecting the coach.

I’m not a fan of it but some players just really need a tough coach to keep their head straight when softer methods doesn’t work.

I used to coach like Pop. He is crazy on purpose. When I see Pop coach now it reminds me of how I used to coach in NBA 2K and it is frustrating and pisses me off that Adam Silver allows it. Not proud of it, I was known as a dictator and someone who lacked empathy in my online NBA2K game and went through a phase when I made absolutely destroyed everyone both physically and emotionally. Bench everybody even my star players, didn’t care who’s feelings were hurt. Charge right into the playoffs. I’d embarrass my most kind-hearted players and coach defensively while going for the championship. Limited movement during the day. So make no mistake about it. Pop knows what he’s doing. He knows people will be disgusted. He knows his coaching is never ending and this is how he can win. He knows people will go away when he starts coaching them like a complete asshole like how he used to coach Tony Parker. He will only be stopped by a stupid new playoff format like play-in tournament or by an obviously more balanced league, ie. LeBron James on the Lakers or Kawhi Leonard on the Clippers. He didn’t intend to be this crazy, but he certainly intends to show you that he doesn’t care if you get disgusted when his coaching allows him to get to the NBA finals. At least that’s how I used to coach. But that was 2005 Pop. Eventually he got to 2024, and coached with more intensity, and was even more unpredictable. There’s no doubt in my mind Pop is more crazy than crazy Steve from Drake & Josh.

I believe it, some players and parents can freak out over the smallest thing. I’m a coach too and got accused of not playing a black player because I was racist… over half my team was black including most of my starting lineup. Other kids were just better. Like the other guy said, I wouldn’t let one bad situation spoil coaching for you if it’s something you love
