I’ve tried to do some googling, but nothing is coming up other than the number of events, but plenty of those are team events so does anyone know the actual figure? I would guess around the thousand mark, but that could be a little over.

I don’t think this is as easily googleable as people think. Using data scraped from the list of medalists on the Olympic site, I get the following number of actual medals awarded to individual athletes, not just events.
Gold: 734
Silver: 743
Bronze: 794
Total: 2271
About 142 Troy ounces of gold.
