I love watching the olympics since I was little, since 2008 in Beijing. I personally think Paris opening ceremony was one of the best I’ve seen.

It was really creative, and they thought outside the box. The artists were amazing, the boat introduction was cool as hell, overall the entire thing was great.

I know about the controversy of the drag queens imitating the last supper or something, but I thought it was really pretty, and my mum, who is catholic, thought it was great.

I don’t know why else people think it was bad. What are your thoughts about it?

TIA and please be nice (and to each other too!)

Gaga is not even French, Camera shots from the across the river would show things too far away, water droplets and fog made camera visual not great, boat idea could have been fun but it fell flat and weird with how some countries were shoved together and others got a tiny dingy, not to mention, once again cameras were so far away you couldn’t get good visuals. Flag bearers were useless and you couldn’t even see them behind those massive blue flags stating the nation. A 4-minute segment about a threesome was strange. And I know the controversy but I can’t comment on the blue man feast of dionysus because my broadcast didn’t even show it.

Best parts were Gojira performance which was fucking rad, and I also liked the silver horse running down the Seine. But there were more cons than pros.

I forgot about the library threesome. I wasn’t offended but it gave me GAP/old navy ad vibes which is not what I think they were going for. If you have to have what is going on literally written on books the characters are holding it is not good. And they didn’t tie them into the outside part of that segment. Like have them walking around so it seems cohesive or something?

i liked it… people tend to think negatively due to the promotion part of the ceremony where they over focused on the landmarks around the city but i think paris being paris, people already willing to pay top $$$ to get to see the city anyways…

They didn’t represent their French history and French culture well enough as the UK, Russia, and China did. I find that disappointing.

They didn’t even let Joan of Arc’s great great great great great granddaughter be part of the opening ceremony. There was news that she was upset that the host didn’t reach out to her to be part of the opening ceremony.

I liked it overall. The biggest thing I didn’t like was that they combined the artistic portion with the parade of nations. It meant the coverage kept switching back and forth between the two and I missed things. I like being able to see both those things so I prefer it when they are kept separate.

I also felt a few parts did drag on some and would have been better if they were a bit shorter. One of the most notable to me was when they had the Olympic flame on the boat. That took so long and we were mostly just watching shots of them on the boat.

While not an issue with the ceremony itself, I do wish they had given the broadcasters notes about each segment and the cultural significance. Would have helped those of us that aren’t French understand it better and also maybe stop the broadcasters from trying to guess what was going on. I know they wanted to keep it secret but they could have made them all sign NDAs and only send them the notes a short time before it started.

Like I said, overall I liked it, though I do hope in the future they go back to separating the artistic performance from the parade of nations, but that’s just my preference.

Also, I really hope sometime soon they release an album of the original pieces Victor Le Masne wrote for it, along with the other music he wrote for the Olympics.

I think there were awesome moments (like Gojira) and too long/boring ones (the drag show and the mechanical horse).

At a certain point I fully believed that they tried to kill Serena Williams.

I feel that the idea of a ceremony on the Seine could have been great, but in the end I thought there were a lot of problems.

It wasn’t great for TV since it was rainy, spread out, and the French aren’t exactly known for the massive spectacle. While the opening ceremony itself probably won’t rank highly for TV viewers, they did an absolutely brilliant job at the aesthetics of the actual Olympics.

If you were there, it was raining and you could only see a small part of it. It was great on TV.

It wasn’t that I hated it, it was just different. In other words, as everyone has been saying…it was French!

So it was unique and ambitious. But from a point of view of a TV show, it was very badly produced. It felt like camera shots were not ready, I’ve read that some bits we didn’t get to see at all. It seems there must have been poor communication between the organisers and the TV element. In today’s world, we re used to sleek TV shows, almost over-rehearsed but this was not one of them, and it’s jarring. I think the commentators here said there had been no rehearsals.

I did feel sorry about the rain but the bridge could have had cover and they could have anticipated it could happen. Some bits were great, but some were really amateur.

I really loved it. The signing and art was beautiful. It was their culture.

People want everything to be put into a box of what they like and aren’t open to anything different.

i agree! i was gonna write that a lot of people don’t like change. so since this one was unique, people attacked it for not being the way it’s always been.

I was astonished! Never have I been more insulted in all my life. How on earth could such an embarrassing spectacle take place where global media criticizes the artistic creation of a host country. It was truly absurd to witness!!

Honestly the concept was good, but the production quality is not there.

The rain unfortunately further destroyed the parade of nations whose out-of-the box concept already did not work. After seeing the stage at Trocadero, I wished they did the parade there. The latter half when the sky was already dark was better.
