The gymnasts are the best ever in strength, speed, durability, all things athletic abilities. The best current gymnast is the best ever in raw showcasing of what human body can do.
However, there is the word ’artistic’ in the name of the discipline.
What is missing is grace, something that you completely embrace upon seeing it. That was prevalent in the earlier decades. The prime example: Nadia Comaneci. Would she be able to win today at a ’gymnastics meet’? No way! How about in ’artistic gymnastics’? She and several others from an earlier era had something special. They had grace!
I’d suggest watching some Suni Lee performances.
If you want to watch what you consider “artistic” just watch rhythmic. Artistic gymnastics as evolved. You’re on the wrong side of history.
That is a ’no’ too. Comfortably on the only side of history (or rather, of understanding the concepts on this one).
This is the narrative that made the RFG feel entitled to Jordan’s medal and is why the old guard is jealous of Simone Biles’ talent.
Has it ever occurred to people that some like Jordan, the most talented dancer of all of the gymnasts at this years olympics’, style of artistry. Who told y’all that artistic moves look like those of Comaneci? In this day and age honey, it looks like Jordan because the sport has evolved. Get over it.
FRG did not feel “entitled” as you so disgustingly put it, your own federation failed to follow proper procedure and your own gymnast was gifted an element she did not perform.
Go away and take your xenophobia with you!
Most athletes have too much pride to claim victory knowing they had a lower score and lost but I guess y’all do things differently in Romania.
I agree. I much prefer the older style of gymnastics too. Late '70s to the '90s really was the golden era with the perfect between artistic expression and athleticism. But, the sport has evolved like most others
Per wikipedia:
Gymnastics evolved in Bohemia and what later became Germany at the beginning of the 19th century. The term “artistic gymnastics” was introduced to distinguish freestyle performances from those used by the military.
I think people take the term “artistry” too literally sometimes. In many non-Anglosphere areas of the world, gymnastics isn’t even known as “artistic gymnastics” - just "gymnastics"or “sports gymnastics” in some places.
