First rank them by medals per capita then multiply the ranks by the amount of medals won divided by the total number of athletes each country sent to compete for those medals.

Bangladesh has 0 medals, but when I saw this, it came to my mind that the 2016 Olympic champion in rhythmic gymnastics Margarita Mamun is half-Bangladeshi, and if she competed for that country (instead of Russia), they could have one gold medal.

Goes to show how much public infrastructure is necessary to develop athletes. That and money.

Here come folk who insist population has nothing to do with it.

But it does. It’s just one variable. The other variables are funding, culture, women’s rights etc. To deny population as a key contributor is naive as fuck.

did you record all the medals of the USSR in Russia? Is this a joke? These are joint medals of 14 republics. Russia has existed since 1991 and I don’t remember it winning 600 gold medals in 33 years.

That would not be an inaccurate statement.

Plus culturally sports is seen as something for children and parents think it’s a distraction from your education. Wish there was a change in culture to seeing it as a part of your education but i doubt that happens anytime soon.

They were 4th in the early 2000’s and at one point had a population larger than the USA when they were the USSR.

Not to mention the Cold War and they very much recovered from WWII.

Russia’s birth rate is below replacement level and that number probably still counts the 500,000+ dead buried (or not) in Ukraine.

In a generation this list will be full of sub Saharan African states too.

This graphic tells volumes about the world, its population, its problems and the fairness of distributed wealth.

Even if it seems to only talk about sports.
