I tend to hold a personal belief that if it can’t be determined objectively who wins, it isn’t a fair contest and therefore isn’t a sport. It isn’t measurable in a fair way, no matter the number of judges, as the judges themselves become an external factor unrelated to the skill and performance of the person doing the work.
There’s lots of impressive styles of dancing, in water, on skates, on strange arbitrary gym equipment, on horses, and they can be entertaining and require high degrees of skill, effort and training, but they aren’t “sports” as much as they are “performing arts”.
I await the pitchforks as this post becomes more of a sport readily measured than any of that dancing.
Fouls in basketball are subjective, does that make it not a sport? There are many subjective elements to sport officiating that undermine such a black-and-white classification.
Let them. They’re too far into the route of “being politically correct and not offending anyone (but us💀)” that there’s no way we’re changing their minds. It’s hilarious though.
Take a look at this clip and tell me this isn’t insane athleticism at work. Btw, both of these young ladies were at the Olympics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmROSBKEj5E
You can’t say that… fencing is literally a combat sport, of course it’s light but still you train physically for it and diving? It actually requires skill and defication to do what they do. Breakdancing just isn’t a sport, as simple as that. We saw the state of it lol
Most people in the breaking scene didn’t want breaking in the Olympics specifically because it’s not a sport that can be judged, it’s the artistic expression of a subculture.
It’s an art, it’s self expression, it takes a lot of practice, skill and strength. It’s not a sport. Most breakers would agree with the above.
No I def get not wanting breaking in the Olympics but saying it can’t be judged or that it isn’t a sport or that it doesn’t require physical and mental dedication to master is bullshit.
Breaking isn’t a sport. Literally no one in the breaking scene would consider it to be one and the vast majority of breakers didn’t want it in the Olympics because again, it’s the person self expression of a subculture.
It literally cannot be judged, it’s a movement. The way that it was judged in the Olympics pissed basically every breaker off because it discouraged multiple power moves.
You cannot judge counter culture self expression, that’s the entire point. It cannot be categorised or put into a box. The entire point.
I never said that it doesn’t take skill and physicality, in fact I specifically said that it does.
It’s always people who’ve no connection to the culture who insist stupid fecking things like this. It’s not a sport, it’s a subculture.
Yeah that’s my thing, breakdancing can be quantified in the same way as gymnastics or whatever the event is where they dance around with the ribbons and hula hoops. I enjoyed watching it tbh.
What you’re describing can also apply to skateboarding but skate competitions some as huge as X-Games and Street league have been around for decades and it’s here to stay in the Olympics thanks to the great showing in Tokyo, same with surfing and climbing. There is the non-competition do it for the art side that goes along with the competition side Break dancing have had competitions for decades but had a shit showing, if it is a competition it is a sport
I know nothing about dressage, my knowledge is in breaking. I’d imagine dressage only exists in the Olympics as a hangover from when the Olympics was basically exclusively European aristocracy, aristocracy love their horses.
I’m going to define a sport as ‘a coded variation of any of the skills that would keep a hunter-gatherer tribe alive’. Since verbal and physical sparring to defuse actual conflict are two of those, Breaking is definitely a sport.
Current sports that I’m not sure meet this definition include snooker and golf.
good, ITS NOT A SPORT
The only real sport is running in circles
Racing Cars are more of a sport than breakdancing
You basically cited the only thing on Earth that is LESS of a sport than breakdancing lol. It wasnt an easy task but you did it, congratulations!
go watch the training F1 drivers do then come back here, i think you will get why motorsport is one of the hardest sports in the world
Why is synchronized swimming or figure skating a sport but not this?

Surely you’re not putting the athleticism and mental agility of figure skating in the same conversation as breakdancing…
Let them. They’re too far into the route of “being politically correct and not offending anyone (but us💀)” that there’s no way we’re changing their minds. It’s hilarious though.
such hypocrisy. There’s plenty of established Olympic sports that wouldn’t pass your purity test if they were new.
Sometimes I need to remind myself this is reddit and the average user hasn’t competed in anything but video games their entire life.
I can speak for football because I played football until 14 when smth happened but again when smth is TERRIBLY bad anyone can speak on it. 😂
tell me you didn’t watch the breaking competition without telling me you didn’t watch the breaking competition.
I saw a kid kick a ball against a wall outside and it hit him in the face. I can’t believe football is an Olympic sport, how stupid.
Take a look at this clip and tell me this isn’t insane athleticism at work. Btw, both of these young ladies were at the Olympics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmROSBKEj5E
I absolutely am and I see no reason not to.
Or dressage
How? Its no more of a sport than fencing or diving to me.
You can’t say that… fencing is literally a combat sport, of course it’s light but still you train physically for it and diving? It actually requires skill and defication to do what they do. Breakdancing just isn’t a sport, as simple as that. We saw the state of it lol
Breakdancing also requires skill, dedication and being physically fit 🤷♂️
you saw raygun and made a snap judgment. you really don’t get it? lol
So breakdancing is a sport, huh? Don’t be ridiculous.
It was in the Olympics. So, yeah, it’s a sport.
it’s really not that hard to see breakdancing can be a sport lol. you don’t get it, huh?
You train physically for breaking to… it requires a SHIT ton of physical training and skill to perform the shit they do. What are you talking about?
Fencing is a historical sport.
… so your defense of something being a sport is that it’s historically been a sport so obviously it is a sport? You do see how stupid that is right?

Fencing is a combat sport.
… gymnastics is an art too…

Yes, but gymnastics is also a sport.

If dancing with ribbons and hoops can be an Olympic event (gymnastics), I don’t really get the why breaking is some completely different category.
It isn’t just gymnastics. Figure skating is an even better example of an art form which is also an Olympic sport.
You’re missing the point.
The entire point of breaking is that it’s a subculture, a counterculture at that.
Again, it’s like having vogueing at the Olympics, it completely nullifies the self expression and subculture element of it, which is the entire point.
The fact that it’s physically demanding and athletic is secondary.
It’s self expression. A subcultures self expression should not be judged and especially shouldn’t be graded.
Yeah that’s my thing, breakdancing can be quantified in the same way as gymnastics or whatever the event is where they dance around with the ribbons and hula hoops. I enjoyed watching it tbh.

Dressage is the same way and people in here go crazy over it. It’s like congrats you can sit on your horse while it walks to music.
I know nothing about dressage, my knowledge is in breaking. I’d imagine dressage only exists in the Olympics as a hangover from when the Olympics was basically exclusively European aristocracy, aristocracy love their horses.
