Would it be more affordable if every country participating contributed an amount proportional to their GDP to help lessen the financial cost and burden for the host nation?

This would allow for smaller countries to host the Olympics and not have only a couple of cities rehosting it 2-3x when other cities have yet to even host once.

I feel like the best solution to solve the hosting issues would be to co-ordinate with the international federations involved in that year’s Olympics to ensure their world championships will be held in that city over the space of 10 or 20 years rather than the city hosting a lot of events in a short period of time to ensure the new facilities are being used longer. For example if the Olympics are being held in Brisbane in then maybe the 2042 World Cup should be held there too, then you could also hold a world athletics championship there in 2047.

I imagine you get to reap any tourist benefits that those places wouldn’t normally get over a longer period of time too (Paris as a place that normally received a lot more tourism didn’t really benefit from the games there).

The IOC makes a HUGE amount of money already. For instance, the US broadcaster NBC has the most expensive rights fees of any broadcaster in the world, they paid almost $8B to broadcast the games for 4 cycles of the summer and winter games.

That money has gone to the IOC, who uses it for god only knows what. If tomorrow I heard there was some massive money laundering scheme or other fraud going on at the IOC it wouldn’t surprise me one bit. They’re sitting on a gigantic pile of cash and ostensibly don’t do anything with it or have any regulatory review of it. That’s just breeding ground for corruption and to top it all off, it’s based in Switzerland.

Yes they do have a lot of money and yeah who knows how responsible they are with it but yes it also costs a lot of money from them to put on the games.

Just give poorer countries aid. Gifting them huge stadiums, etc. is just giving them additional burdens in the long run.

No. Most countries can barely fund their athletes.

Tax the billionaires. Like how Flava Flav took on the Women’s Water Polo team. There is enough money in this world to do anything we want.

If the IOC gave one shit about small countries hosting they could easily fund it themselves.

They and the sports federations aren’t doing this out of the kindness of their hearts. The games are incredibly profitable for them.

I don’t think it is a good idea, but I’m curious how this would work.

Would each country give a million dollars? What about those that can’t afford it? I guess you could do percentages, but now you have rich countries paying a lot of money for nothing.

Then you have to trust that they actually use it properly. There are bound to be many countries requesting to do it despite not having the capacity like airports, transportation, housing, fields, and so on. Many of the current countries doing the olympics already have some of these things. Sure a poorer country could update some of these, but there just wouldn’t be a enough money to do them all.
