The Paris 2024 Olympics were officially opened on Friday, July 26. Over the next 16 days, 10,714 athletes from over 206 National Olympic Committees participated in 329 events across 32 sports. 92 NOCs received at least one medal (93 if you include AIN), with 64 winning at least one gold medal. Albania, Cape Verde, Dominica, Saint Lucia, and the Refugee Olympic Team won their first medals. Hosts France won 16 golds, 26 silvers, and 22 bronzes for a total of 64 medals, almost doubling their total of 33 medals (10 golds, 12 silvers, and 11 bronzes) from Tokyo.

I saw quite a few people requesting a cooldown thread to soothe the pain of their post-Olympics Withdrawal/Depression, so here it is! I figured it would be a centralized place to discuss everyone’s favourite memories of the past two and a half weeks and share photos/videos. I made a list of some superlatives that we can talk about:

  • Favourite overall memory
  • Favourite event to watch
  • Favourite events that you watched for the first time
  • Favourite moment from an athlete/team from your country
  • Favourite moment from an athlete/team not from your country
  • Favourite moment from a French athlete/team
  • Favourite upset or underdog story
  • Favourite performance from an athlete you were already rooting for coming into the Games
  • Favourite athlete(s) that you discovered through the Games
  • Funniest moment
  • Most wholesome/heartwarming moment
  • Favourite venue

###Important Reminder Many of you will already know this, but for those who don’t, there will also be daily threads for the Paralympics, starting on August 28 and ending on September 8. Come join us then for 11 more exciting days of sport – the party in Paris isn’t quite over yet!

For first time viewers new to the Paralympics, the mods strongly encourage you to try watching wheelchair rugby (AKA murderball). It’s possibly the single best event to introduce yourself to the Games.

Anyone know how long Peacock will have replays available on the app? I plan to take my time and watch events I missed but don’t want to log in one day and they are all pulled.

Seems like everything except gymnastics and artistic swimming still has the world feed version up.

I’d assume it’s staying up until at least the Paralympics start.

They already took down the televised versions of the basketball games! I wanted to watch replays and now they only have the world feed versions up. The difference in announcing is palpable.

Normally at least until the Paralympics are over.

But when they are taken down you should be able to access the replays from the Olympics site as the NBC exclusivity period is over by that time.

Eventually they’ll end up on the Olympics site and their official YouTube channel. Not the NBC televised versions but the world feed versions will be there (without ads and showing the full events including medal ceremonies).

Favorite is anything swimming, but swimming is my favorite sport (whether to watch or participate in), so, no surprise there.

I always feel so sad when swimming ends even when there are other amazing events to come. Just something about that last sign off from the swimming commentary bums me out. Swimming is also my favorite sport, period (inside or outside of the Olympics).

    • Favourite overall memory - As a French person living in Paris and raised close to another Olympic venue, being able to see the world coming to my home town. Also huge fan of the Olympic games, to be able to see the games in reality fulfilled one of my childhood dreams.
    • Favourite event to watch: By far the sport climbing. I had a very good seat, I didn’t watched this sport before and I was impressed by the athletes. Much more impressed than any other sports.
    • Favourite events that you watched for the first time: Climbing as above, but also the finals for BMX racing as well as the stunning beach volley at the Tour Eiffel
    • Favourite moment from an athlete/team from your country: Being at the BMX racing stadium at the finals and assist to the combo gold for France, silver for France and bronze for France.
    • Favourite moment from an athlete/team not from your country: The victory of Denmark in handball (as half Dane)
    • Favourite moment from a French athlete/team: The victory of the French team in Volley ball
    • Favourite upset or underdog story: The failure of French handball team who were winning 6 seconds before the end of the 1/4 finals, they had the ball in their hand with au fault given to them. They only had to keep the ball, but the player who had the ball decided to try a pass which was intercepted, goal for Germany to tie the game, overtime and defeat.
    • Favourite performance from an athlete you were already rooting for coming into the Games: The victory of Teddy Riner in Judo.
    • Favourite athlete(s) that you discovered through the Games: Leon Marchand
    • Funniest moment: The “dance” from this Australian girl.
    • Most wholesome/heartwarming moment: See the world having a good time, cheering for their country in a respectful way, feel the good wibes from the 26 July up to this Sunday night
    • Favourite venue: Tour Eiffel beach volley stadium

Is there any official reasoning why cricket is in LA28? It is natural for Brisbane, so I guess LA and Brisbane have an agreement to keep Baseball/Softball in 2032 if cricket is in 2028?

We have a large diaspora from Cricket playing nations, a lot of Indians and Pakistanis and a smaller handful from the West Indies member islands and a lot of those peoples live in California.

I’d hope Australia would want Baseball at the Brisbane games. I know you guys made at least a Liam Hendricks and probably a few more players, so it isn’t as strange a fit as a Greek or Spanish baseball team would be

Don’t have answers for all of these but for the ones below…

    • Favourite event to watch - as someone who doesn’t have regular access to watch handball, handball is very cool
    • Favourite events that you watched for the first time - was excited for breaking and it delivered from the very bad to the absolutely spectacular
    • Favourite moment from a French athlete/team - men’s rugby!
    • Funniest moment - the Aussie breaking lady
    • Most wholesome/heartwarming moment -
    • Favourite venue - beach volleyball under the Eiffel Tower, that skatepark, Tahiti!

Went to my first live Olympics during the first week. Expected nothing (but was excited about it nonetheless), and everything exceeded beyond expectations. Quick thoughts:

    • The Champion’s Park is a very welcomed edition and it was really well done. This should be done in every Olympics going forward!
    • The arenas were beautiful! The colors and design were soothing to the eyes!
    • Really love the use of smartphone app. I printed zero tickets, and info can be found on the app.
    • Loads of wholesome and good sportsmanship behavior!! Love the memes.

All in all, I think this is the best Olympics I have watched.

Just watching a replay of the hammer throw. Katzburg threw an absolute bomb in that first round!

Anyways, just a random fun fact for the evening. The last known recorded ancient Olympic games was in the year 393 AD.

Alright, so about a week or so ago people here teased me for daring to rewatch the entire men’s tennis gold medal match between Alcaraz and Djokovic. Well, I DID watch it…the first set at least, lol. It was already too late into the night so I decided to leave the second set for another day. I thought I’d have time the following night to finish but I was so busy and the next day’s events were about to take place that I thought it’d be better if I finish watching after the games ended. And so, here I am, ready to finish watching the match which will take another 90 minutes. A long time indeed, but I hope it will be worth it!

Finland is only country who didn’t win a medal in Paris olympics 2024 as one of the previous summer Olympics host nation., this ever happened before? Starting counting a country only after they hosted a Games .

I watched the bronze medal bout between Olga Kharlan and Choi Sebin (I missed it for some reason on the day of, though I was quite anxious about the SFs…), and wow, what a turn of events! Choi (who beat 2x World Champion Misaki Emura in a previous bout) shows off her skills, but Kharlan did a good job in changing tactics, which gave her the win. The medal, while not gold, really meant a lot to her.
