Good. She’s awesome but she didn’t beat either of the Romanian women.
LA 2028 is going to be a fun time for the Romanian federation.
Well, what was the saying? Victory is sweet but revenge is sweeter.
She better hold onto that medal, this whole thing has pitted athletes against each other due to administrative fuck ups.
This isn’t over by a long shot. The US is going to appeal above CAS due to them not being allowed to properly present evidence. The likelihood of CAS reopening and admitting error was always considered low. This literally means nothing.
They were allowed - they had 4 days, two of them in response for their request for an extension.
The request for an extension from the USOPC is straight up not true.
A Euro news article dropped yesterday/this morning that the first delay was requested by the FIG and the second was requested by the Romanians.
The USOPC not being named a party in the arbitration and was just a witness, didn’t have the authority to even request a delay anyway.
FIG - 1 extension ROM - 1 extension USA - 2 extension That’s 4 days.
USAG/USOPC never requested a delay. That information is false.
Hopefully it isn’t, but realistically it likely is. I want a smear campaign on these corrupt officials. Release the 47 second appeal, name names for the CAS arb panel, testify to congress. Their names should be mud forever.
No doubt the legendary Romanian gymnast Nadia Comineci pulled some strings to give an extra boost for reconsideration for the Romania gymnast.
She was livid after the fuckup for both Romania and USA.
Can you explan a bit more please? I just don’t quite understand how you say Nadia pulled for the Romanian gymnast but was mad for both the USA and Romania.
She is an American who lives in Oklahoma now with her U.S. gold medalist husband Bart Conner. Tough for her in topics like these
So when presented with facts, they decide to ignore them. And why would you strip someone of a medal like that when it’s been reserved for cheaters and dopers? Neither of which Jordan is.
The Romanian Federation pleaded for 3 bronze medals to be awarded. Please don’t come for Ana, she was the epitome of class in this whole debacle. I can’t understand for the life of me why some of yall would want a medal that is not deserved.
No one is coming for Ana.
I must have misread your comment then, excusez moi
But that’s not what they said at first. Go back and look at what Romania said at first, and also what Ana said at first. they weren’t for three gold medals at first. I’m not condemning them for that because we all say things under the heat of the moment. And then after they thought about it rationally, they did ask for gold medals.
I can’t find their initial statements. Can you elaborate on that?
They have the time from the FIG clocks. They don’t care about the times the USA or Romania federations have. The Fig clocks say it was passed 1 minute, so it was passed one minute.
I’d keep the medal and force them to send the other girl a second medal. Stats are a luxury, you can always tell yourself you were the true winner.
In a court governed by rules, people bringing cases have to follow those rules. Same as any court anywhere.
Big thanks to the bureaucrats for making this into a shitshow as always
I just think it’s stupid someone can submit a complaint that someone else’s complaint was too late (by four seconds no less) and actually have it be accepted. It’s oxymoronic.
As for what it means to team USA it’s pretty meaningless, I feel bad for Chiles though and I’m surprised the Romanian wanted a medal on these terms.
Ana herself is likely not even involved in this process, just like Jordan isn’t. Both of them have been nothing but gracious and kind. Unlike this comment.
I think it’s fair to gently remind some of these organizations that they would not exist without American support of the Olympics over the past several decades.
Right? I would love is the USA says “we pull WADA funding if this isn’t cleared up”, as it appears WADA is like 50% funded by USA (IOC has said that the USA must support WADA’s standard to not lose the Salt Lake bid, but I don’t think that included funding)
Right? I would love is the USA says “we pull WADA funding if this isn’t cleared up”
Sounds mildly corrupt to pressure organisations into making decisions favourable to your nation based on funding…
And by mildly I mean extremely lol.
Imagine if this was said by a chinese
So WADA should be partial to the USA because of funding. Isn’t that corruption?
Perhaps, but it’s not unreasonable to say that all inquiries should be settled before the podium
Except they start to wonder if WADA is partial to someone else (the whole China drama, that from how I read it, was uncovered by a Time’s investigation)
Seems like all these organisations have some form of corruption :( gymnastics seems like a mess
Sadly it’s seeming so … you think with what the Olympics stands for, people could do better
I think it’s fair to gently remind some of these organizations that they would not exist without American support of the Olympics over the past several decades.
I think there’s a word for that… corruption maybe?
Don’t be nasty and corrupt, you make the rest of us Americans look bad
There’s nothing nasty about reminding them who pays the bills.
Sure it is. It’s abuse of the power of wealth and inherently corrupt. No better than a rich kid losing a game and kicking everyone off the court because their dad’s name is on it.
Besides, that money was there to fund a fair system, not a system that favors Americans. In a fair system, sometimes the result doesn’t go your way. That’s life. Breaking the system because your feelings got hurt is nasty and weird.
That sounds like you’re justifying corruption and blatant bias. Girl wtf.
What a disgusting comment. It’s not 21k, it’s actually 60k, and it’s awarded by the federation, that already announced they’re going to treat both Sabrina and Ana as bronze medalist and award both of them the prize.
It turns out the head of CAS panel that made the decision was supposed to recuse himself due to a ten year relationship representing the government of Romania!
He also represented US companies against Romania, but that’s for some reason omitted
That’s how I feel about it, too. Forgive my silly question, but realistically what repercussions would Chiles or US Gymnastics have if Chiles just keeps the medal?
They have no legal claim to the medal at this point. The IOC could ban her from future Olympics, but if she doesn’t want to compete in future Olympics then that’s not much of a threat.
What usually happens is that the IOC puts the pressure on the country’s national Olympic committee to get the medal back–they can threaten them with fines, sanctions, even banning the entire country from the next Olympics if they wanted to. (Obviously the chances of the entire US getting banned are basically nonexistent.) And then they show up at Jordan’s house and ask her nicely to give the medal back.
I think Chiles would face sanctions from the international gymnastics body. As far as USAG goes, I’m not sure. They could face sanctions too, but they obviously have more leverage than a single athlete does.
Exactly. The athlete who displayed a gross lack of sportsmanship and challenged Chiles’ complaint because of a four second dispute can try and steal her medal but she won’t give it up.
I don’t think it’s a lack of sportsmanship to make use of the processes that are there. I do think the processes here are insane.
I’m someone with a legal background and the way they have things set up is a mess. From what I can tell, every step of the process is calibrated for speed. I agree that the initial decisions should be made quickly (but surely they can spare 2 more minutes for the final competitor to file). However, appeals need more care and time than just a few days.
This whole thing just reeks of an organization that wants to shove this under a rug and move on. They know they screwed up multiple times at the competition and now are using a complete lack of flexibility to try to cover for it. The problem for them is that they are facing a litigant that doesn’t lack for resources and is highly determined.
Best analysis I’ve seen so far.
The head of the arb panel used to represent Romania. This is 100% political/corruption, in case that wasn’t obvious to anyone
Let’s have them both fight the man that won gold in women’s boxing, whoever lasts the longest gets the bronze.
The Americans on Twitter are gonna have a field day with this one. Better stay off there for a bit.
Anyways I feel so bad for Jordan. This is utterly terrible and she does not deserve this. Oh well - LA2028 she’ll be back and she’ll get gold for sure!!
While at that… avoid r/gymnastics at all cost. Lol
That whole sub is a cesspool.
They are doubting the PRESS RELEASES of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation, they genuinely believe the Romanians lied or fabricated the evidence that Chiles’ coach was late, even after CAS ruled that they were right.
And they praise everything related to the US Gymnastics Federation, they believed Chiles’ coach has some video that proves she was on time just because she claims she does (no proof). Also, they didn’t believe the Romanian lawyer when he said the ruling was made based on the official Olympics clock because some rando on reddit posted that CAS ruled based on “a Romanian video” :))
Also, they are attacking Ana (calling her now “the Romanian girl” - lol, you know her name), Sabrina, Nadia Comăneci and everyone in the Romanian organizations.
This is how US get so many medals, the amount of rematch US asked and got accepted is way higher than any other country (and often it is because they didn’t perform well). And then they act like IOC, CAS or WADA is against them.
I understand being frustrated but it sounds like believed Romania, right?
The threads from that subreddit are pretty tame. I have not seen any drama besides confusion about what kind of evidence Romanian submitted. I have seen many comments gracious to the athletes affected.
What are you talking about lol
FROM OUR COLD DEAD HANDS
Jordan didn’t produce a bronze medal performance. I honestly think Sabrina MANECA-VOINEA should have gotten bronze. Her camp should have requested a review of her penalty.
They did. The rules don’t allow appeals of execution scores, so the CAS rejected that.
