Noah Lyle’s statement was unnecessary, even if he is of course right.

But for the fact that so many idiots are already outdoing each other with increasingly stupid statements about him, we owe him a great debt of gratitude.

Noah Lyles is wrong about “world champions” (the league that brings in the best players from the world, and has them all competing, gets to crown “world champions” – not in the same way as the Olympics or FIBA, but all of those have a different claim on “world champions” and they’re all legit.) But this ain’t it. Pretending he was afraid? Cmon man, dude won a gold in the 100m before he dropped out of other events with the 'rona.

The real reason he’s wrong is that no one really calls NBA champs “world champions” anymore. Is it even in the official title? All I know is I’ve listened to a lot of NBA media this year, and they’ve talked about NBA championships, like, daily. I’ve never heard anyone use the phrase “world champion.”

Or, I dunno, did they stop because of Noah Lyles? I never considered that.

even before Lyles went viral about “world champions of what?” all of the official communication from the NBA about the champs was “NBA champions”. The league keeps the NBA branding front and center, and they’ve been more deliberate about it in recent years (and, probably their guidelines for media partners emphasize this, though they’re not 100% on always doing it.) My Nuggets shirts from 2023 all say “NBA champions”, not “world champions”. The only league I know of that routinely says “world” is MLB’s World Series. “World champs” is really more something that fans say than something the league says.
