Like many here I had an amazing time following the Paris 2024 Olympics, and it was a privilege to have this opportunity to display our capital and country to the world.

The Tokyo Olympics were in my opinion the most forgettable ones in recent times, unfortunately a lot of what made Paris 2024 an international success couldn’t happen there because of Covid restrictions.

The pandemic robbed the Japanese of a once in a lifetime opportunity to showcase their culture and country, and the rest of us were robbed of the opportunity to enjoy the Tokyo Olympics the way they were meant to be.

I’m sorry but this is tone-deaf as fuck. Who the hell needs to look “in retrospect” to know that the event that caused the deaths of millions of people globally was “an absolute shame” and we couldn’t properly celebrate sport for two weeks in Tokyo. Fuck out of here with this nonsense.

      Fair point.

But I didn’t mean that Covid was bad “in retrospect” because of the Olympics obviously, of course it was a global disaster for much more serious reasons. I was just talking specifically about the olympics because this is what this sub is about…

I didn’t mean to offend anybody, sorry if I did.

There are some people on Reddit who seem to have been extremely traumatised by the pandemic and have a very short fuse on any topic related to it.

        It’s not your fault really.

Mate, your original point is absolutely spot on. I was lucky to go to Japan pre Covid and walked past some of the venues they were setting up. Tokyo is a fantastic city, and I really feel for everyone involved. All the preparations, all the money spent for a fairly dull Olympics. Many athletes decided not to participate and stay at home with their families, which is fair enough. Multiple things can be true. It’s truly sad how it unfolded. I said the same to my partner multiple times during this Olympics.

You didn’t do anything wrong. “It’s bad that X happened” doesn’t imply “nothing else that happened could have also been bad”.
