Like many here I had an amazing time following the Paris 2024 Olympics, and it was a privilege to have this opportunity to display our capital and country to the world.

The Tokyo Olympics were in my opinion the most forgettable ones in recent times, unfortunately a lot of what made Paris 2024 an international success couldn’t happen there because of Covid restrictions.

The pandemic robbed the Japanese of a once in a lifetime opportunity to showcase their culture and country, and the rest of us were robbed of the opportunity to enjoy the Tokyo Olympics the way they were meant to be.

What do you mean “In retrospect”? Did you not feel and realize it while it was happening? It was pretty obvious that it was a sad experience before during and after.

I have a feeling that Tokyo will have a better chance at hosting again in a shorter timeframe than normal, for the reason you stated. The ability showcase themselves was limited.

That said, it’s not cheap to host an Olympics, and I’m sure Tokyo’s ability to recoup costs was also limited due to covid. Their appetite to host another may be limited for that reason.

my family lived there from 2015-2017 in a random town central japan. the preparations were a common topic of conversation specifically how all the car companies were working together to have self-driving cars ready

Once in a lifetime is a bit hyperbolic, especially for a rich country like Japan.

While I agree Tokyo should get a second shot, I’m old enough to remember the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, which most definitely featured a Japanese cultural showcase. Japan also hosted the 1972 Winter Games in Sapporo.

Salt Lake City, Utah, USA hosted the Winter Olympics in 2002, and is hosting again in 2034.

Los Angeles hosted the Summer games in 1984 and will be hosting again in 2028.

Tokyo just has to reapply and demonstrate a good case, which I’m sure they will.

Agree. If you take a look at the concept art, the show could’ve been even bigger and better. Tokyo needs another chance to host it again

I wouldn’t say it was once in a lifetime. I think Tokyo has been the host at least one other time.

But yeah it is sad. I was there in 2019, when they were building everything, and everyone seemed excited for the event.

Really sad that they couldn’t showcase the original opening ceremony. I think the experience kinda traumatized some of the Japanese people cause now, they seem very reluctant to host events now.

As someone who went to Japan for the Rugby world cup the year before I am gutted for Japan and Tokyo. The city was amazing and it really is a chance to show off on the biggest stage of them all and they were denied that.

If no one wants to host the 2032 games I don’t see why Tokyo can’t be offered again (if they want to)

Brisbane already has 2032, so we’re looking at 2036 or beyond at this point. 😱

With all due respect, is there a lot of culture for Brisbane to show off (or Australia for that matter)?

I didn’t realise the 2032 Olympics had already been awarded, so yeah, 2036 at the earliest

Depends on the timezone too. In China, we watched Tokyo 2021 and Beijing 2022 more than the Paris game.

This was my thought exactly. Every Olympics is an opportunity to learn about the host country. In the lead up to 2020, I was eagerly anticipating what Tokyo would have in store for us. Unfortunately we never got to see it.

I had a bunch of tickets and my hotel reserved, and instead it ended up being the Olympics I’ve watched the least of because it all just felt off. I hope Tokyo gets another chance in my lifetime; it’s a second home to me and I was crazy excited to have it in a city I know so well.

I mean, in Tokyo, they prioritized athletes’ safety, and in Paris, they were openly spreading COVID, had athletes hospitalized, and had various athletes collapsing on their various fields of play. I think it’s kind of shame that has been allowed to happen.

i still maintain they would have been better off just skipping that olympiad and holding the tokyo olympics in 2024.
