Watch "Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz - How much did Charles Barkley lose by returning to TNT? "A minimum of $100 million. A minimum." Barkley explains why he chose to return to Turner Sports as a broadcasting free agent. "The number-one thing for me is that my people at Turner get to keep their jobs another year."" on Streamable.
He’s not coming back to TNT for one more year to save anyone’s job - everyone has that job another year regardless.
After that - he’s not keeping anyone’s job because TNT is losing the show. The staff will be moved to other shows or not but Barkley’s participation is irrelevant.
So he’s saying he’s not quitting because he wants to save people’s jobs but that’s just not true.
I’m sure he did give up $100M type offers but saving jobs wasn’t the reason. The reason is he wanted to retire at 60, doesn’t want to have to work so much, and never would’ve taken a $100M job to put in 5 days a week with ESPN in the first place.
I responded to this comment being snarky earlier (and deleted it to make sure I was justified), and just gotta say my bad, I wasn’t justified at all and your take does nail the issue
Lol at the time he signed the contract they hadn’t already lost the show, this is hardly rocket science. At the time of negotiation he on some level likely assumed (or was led to believe) that TNT would successfully bid for the NBA rights if he re-upped.
Yes other networks and outlets were trying to get him from turner if he left. That’s where he left money on the table?

Why does everyone keep saying this like it has to happen? TNT could produce inside the NBA for ESPN or NBC if they really want to.
Why would ESPN or NBC pay TNT to produce the show when they already have people that can do the job, in their definition, on their payroll?
Chuck aint a retiring anytime soon. Just a negotiating tactic.
Dudes a gambler. He aint turning down the biggest payday of his career.
He wont be doing 5 days a week either. More like 2-3 if he wants.
He did a show with Gayle King for christ’s sake that recently got cancelled. That is not a guy retiring anytime soon.
