My perspective from Europe is that a lot of American fans treat it the same as going to a concert. They go to a game to be entertained. In most of Europe, with the exception of big football clubs that get a lot of tourists in their game, you go to a game to support your team and you have a role to play in winning the game. It’s your duty to be loud and to give as much to the team as you can. It’s a bit rooted in the notion that the club belongs to the community, and it’s not like you’re fan of the club as much as the club belongs to the people and it’s up to the players to show that they deserve to play for us. Obviously this is all disappearing as it all gets too commercialised, but for me that’s the big difference between european teams and american teams.

There’s certainly some of that in the USA, but definitely not in the NBA. Maybe in college sports, but I don’t watch that.
