ANT is a great player but I don’t see what he’s necessarily “elite” at offensive besides finishing, which this is his first year of really taking a jump in that aspect. Statistically, he’s a sub 40% shooter from the midrange and a decent 3 point shooter when compared to league average. Playmaking is not his strength either.

He has a lot of potential but the way media talks about him, you would think he’s the best player ITL. I feel the only reason he gets this much chatter is because his face looks like Jordan. Am I wrong? Just a discussion.

I agree 100%. Anthony Edwards is still ascending and only 23 but people talk about him like he’s a top 10 player (he’s not). My big concern with him is defensively, he idles a lot off ball and is out of position spatially. He’s still really good and he’s going to improve but I think the hype train needs to slow down a bit

Every other day I’m seeing people complain that Ant is overhyped even though most people have him in that #10-13 range.

The media propped him up because he’s American and now people are sick of it but because of that people have become overly critical.

    Yes and no

Yes because he hasn’t accomplished anything yet and we’ve seen better players

No because he’s 23 yrs old

    We’ll see

Someone just told me he’s a better player than Mitchell. NBA community is cooked. ( I also wish Mitchell never got injured this year they keep comparing Mitchell stats to other players with no context of his stats falling off a cliff.)

“Got that dawg in him” isn’t an empirical statistic anymore?

No, I’m with you. He’s on a steep trajectory and appears to have all of the tools to be a top player in the league but many NBA talking heads were proclaiming him already a top-5ish player during the early rounds of playoffs last year, which was getting ahead of things (granted, there are always ~10 “top-5” players and ~20 “top-10” players but still). He’s not better right now (at least based on where we left off) than several players he seemed to leapfrog over. I won’t be surprised if he gets there in terms of all-around game but many people put him ahead of perennial All-NBA players too quickly based on potential.

He’s got the best combination of ability and personality to be the face of the league. Luka, SGA, and Tatum are likely better players but none of them are as extroverted or aren’t American, so they’re less of a draw.

No. He is a great player but the hype is insane. He had 5 playoff games this year where he didn’t even score 20 points, which is kind of unacceptable for a guy that is supposed to be a top 5-10 player.

I think Anthony Edwards skill level gets overrated a bit but age gets underrated/not talked about enough. His age to skill ratio is probably second only to Victor, for his age he is extremely extremely good.

If he continues on the trajectory he appears to be on, no reason to think he can’t be a top 3 guy in the league one day, but right now I think there are probably 10 guys above him I’d pick to build around and win a series right now.

I think you’re correct. A lot of people struggle with the concept that a player being overhyped isn’t the same thing as them being bad.

Edwards doesn’t (yet) have the efficiency of a top 10 player. He had a .575 true shooting in the regular season, and even in his widely acknowledged as great playoff run that went up to .598. I want to be clear that’s good efficiency for a guy at that volume, but it’s not elite. Devin Booker was at .611 true shooting, Mitchell was at .595. Tyrese Maxey had the same ppg and essentially the same efficiency at .573.

I think Edwards will get there with the efficiency and consistently put up seasons at .600 true shooting or better in his prime but I think people are jumping the gun a bit with him based on team performance, even though offensively they were bang average.

Being the leading scorer on a primarily defensive team has always been a formula for getting a bit overrated though, it’s not surprising people focus a lot more on offense than defense.
