r/Olympics as it wakes up in the morning:

I think I’ll have 4 threads about cancelling breaking today.

I did not care for breaking and here’s why: I feel that that the core of the Olympics is respect between the athletes, and breaking, as it was held, is the antithesis of that. Even if it’s supposed to be all in good fun, I don’t like a sport that normalizes the competitors mocking each other during their routines. And it sounds like that mockery is core to the sport, they won’t do a sanitized version, just as they’re not allowed to do preplanned routines, which is honestly what I thought it was going to be.

Mockery/Intimidation is a friendly way the make the show more interactive. It’s way easier to do a duel if the other is challenging you. Fact to the matter, the winner, Phil Wizard, use the different strategy encouraging his opponent and even copying their moves to destabilize the opponent.

It’s still an optional sport for 2032, I believe.

I think Australia already had to submit their sport list and breaking wasn’t on it, don’t know if they can revise though.

Each host country gets to choose 4 sports they want to temporarily add in the games for that year. (I think that’s what I read) I didn’t know that until last week myself.

The US would rather choose sports like Lacrosse and softball, for instance, which are both extremely high chances to win Gold medals.

Right about the same time Raygun was selected to compete for Australia and probably the same time she started packing on the weight

Walking, dressage and taekwondo survive somehow. Cheerleading for 2032.

Dressage is going to be well funded. It’s rich people that do it. It’s also been in the Olympics since 1912. So it’s unlikely to be going anywhere despite being clowned on by many every Olympics.

It does however, come across to most as rich people buying an expensive horse and buying a medal; given many of the competitors are often in their 50s and 60s and still have a shot at winning a medal, I can’t say that that is not the truth either. Might as well just add dog obstacle courses as well.

Riding a horse at that level is a skill that most non horsemen understand. The horse is only one half of the team.

I get that. There is a skill involved that not a lot of people have. But like I said, you still have a shot at winning in a much later age group as it doesn’t require the same physicality that the other sports require. I think part of the Olympics is being at the peak of what a human can achieve physically and riding is not really that.

There are many other “sports” that require an immense amount of skill but you would never see in the olympics because the lack of physicality. Take darts, billiards, esports or bowling to name a few. The best of the best deserve recognition for their talents but is it in the spirit of what the games are about? Ultimately, I think dressage is accepted as medal worthy, so are many other games that are unlikely to ever be included.

Speed walking has been around at every Olympics since 1908. Despite some of the ridicule, it’s not going away, in fact they added the marathon distance to the 20km race this year.

I am tired of hearing about this story.

It was amusing to watch, and mostly for the memes. But this isn’t an event I am going to lose sleep for not being in the Olympics.

It might have stood a chance to comeback in 2032; become as popular as the 100m sprint, but Phd Raygun put the final nails in its coffin.

Tbf, this subreddit has been pretty good. Comments are goofy, and occasional posts are grim, but it’s mostly mainstream clickbait that has driven a lot of the games-adjacent outrage
