I never watch basketball and am very curious how much skill disparity exists in other leagues when compared to the NBA. I have a great understanding of football; so I was wondering what some apt comparisons are.

Also, opinions aside, let’s just say Premier League is the basis of comparison and not necessarily saying that it is the best league in the world.

ACB would be LaLiga, same two way horse race like in football.

Turkish and Greek league would be Bundesliga, depending on who you ask which one is stronger (also assuming BuLi is second best league).

    Euroleague is UCL.

Skill-wise, there’s no comparison since there’s top players in many different leagues around the world in football. In basketball, all of the best play in the NBA.

NBA is like the MLS with no relegation, promotion. Premier league teams are a higher quality product because they don’t reward failure

      Pros and cons.

The fact is, some EPL teams just straight up cannot afford to compete for the championship - and others are only ever mid at worst, because they can spend.

Obviously there are underdog stories but overall, there’s less parity.

Personally, I like the draft system, but I won’t pretend I don’t wish for a better lottery system than “the worst team gets the best odds”. At the very least, it’s nice to see that being the worst team in the NBA doesn’t really guarantee you anything.

still interesting to see mid or top level teams get off to a poor start in the first half of the season, every team knows there is a very real chance that after all the money is spent and checks signed if they don’t win games they can be relegated. Injuries, fluke wins, long travel away games can still kill a team that has spent billions so the stakes always exist. The worst thing in professional sports next to oil money is seeing your favorite team go out there while benching the best players and not even try to win for the “benefit” of the organization

Other top soccer leagues around would also be equivalent to the NBA. They are top level leagues.

    For a comparison to soccer:

    • US college basketball is like the Champions league

    • FIBA is like league one.

    • foreign domestic leagues like the French, Australian, or Chinese basketball leagues are like league two.

It’s not a good comp because the nba is way further from any other league than premiership is from other top soccer leagues. The sports are quite a bit different.
