Cricket is huge there, lots of poor people with few opportunities, & big emphasis on education and work vs playing sports.

It’s somewhat controversial, but some suggest Indians are generally not genetically super gifted athletically, which is probably at least somewhat true (they certainly don’t tend to be tall). Many eat a vegetarian diet which probably doesn’t help.
