The LA 28 Preview show on NBC have confirmed the following six sports will be returning/debuting at the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Games:

  1. Flag Football
  2. Cricket
  3. Lacrosse
  4. Squash
  5. Baseball
  6. Softball

This should mean that six current sports from Paris 2024 will be replaced. Here is what we know so far.

  1. Breakdancing (IOC Confirmed)
  2. Boxing (IOC vote to take place in 2026 to make it official)

We still need 4 other sports to go. Personally I think Boxing deserves to stay. It has a long history and its unfortunate with our current sports gender climate, it may be gone for a long time tipping in the favor being voted out. I think 3. 3x3 Basketball should go. Not many countries play it and its very niche “sport”. 4. Equestrian. Let the horses rest. 5. Golf. Not many countries play this sport and its not fun to watch at all. 6. Surfing. Not many countries in the world have water to play this sport.

Which sports do you think won’t make the cut in our epic sports marathon?

Baseball and softball are technically counted as 1 sport, so I believe they only need to replace 5. Also, I think 3x3 is more or less counted as a different event under that over-arching shroud of basketball and wouldn’t have to be taken out.

Surfing is a lock to stay because it was given “core sport” status and can’t be replaced. Breakdancing is confirmed out. Boxing seems highly likely with them having no official governing body. Weightlifting has also been heavily rumored to potentially being taken out. As for the other 2, it’s really anyone’s guess. I could see equestrian being taken out because of a lot of the controversy that came out of Paris regarding the horse treatment, and the fact that modern pentathlon already has a plan in place to potentially replace it with an obstacle course. I could see golf, field hockey, artistic swimming, and badminton all being a potential 5th.

They don’t need to lose any other sports though. Boxing is only iffy because of the governing body shakeup

They don’t need to replace or remove any because that’s not remotely how it works. As of now, the only sports from Paris that will not be in LA are breaking and boxing, and it’s still possible boxing will be in.

That’s not how it works at all. There’s not a limit on how many sports are in the program. They’re not removing anything to “make space” for the new events.

I’m looking forward to seeing lacrosse!

That sport is close to non existence here. I never saw a game, never even saw someone play it let alone tried it myself. I have no clue how it works lol but it seems to be big! Always nice to learn new sports!

It’s fun to play ! not so fun to watch. Mostly played in north east USA by rich kids to gain access to schools that they would never be able to get into academically. The quality of athletes compared to other sports is staggering. It’s also a very expensive sport to play.

I think they now have 28 core sports (including boxing and weightlifting) and 5 additional sports proposed by local organisers and ratified by the IOC. So these 5 are in regardless.

Weightlifting and boxing may go because of governance issues, which means the 28 becomes 26. Breaking was not part of the 28 core and if it was in LA would have been part of the +5.
