Hey all,

I’m new to the NBA and basketball, and I’m trying to get into it this season. I keep hearing about rivalries, what are the biggest ones I should know about? Also, any tips on which team and how to pick a team to support would be awesome!

Thanks!

Celtics rivals: Lakers, sixers and knicks.

It’s historic and has existed from the beginning. Boston, Philly and NY rivalries are really just northeast city rivalries that goes beyond basketball but every every sport you can think of. Lots of animosity there, especially for fans actually from those cities, but most will back each other up when anyone hates on the east. It’s a love-hate thing going on. With the lakers, it’s genuine hate from both sides.

Miami and Milwaukee have somewhat become “rivals” due always meeting in the playoffs in recent years by a lot of the new gen… but old heads don’t claim them as rivals.

OKC and Timberwolves should be fun to watch for a while. Young talent and likable players.

Awesome, welcome to NBA fandom! The most natural is gonna be to follow the teams of your fave players. Eg if you got into the NBA bc of the Olympics, which players did you enjoy watching the most?

Outside of that, I recommend picking a team that’s at least half decent, their records last year should be a rough indicator of that… not fun to root for a team that had no chance of making the playoffs and might actually be incentivized to lose more than win in the regular season (read up on “tanking”)
