I noticed that both teams had some parallels in their respective sports (NBA & MLB).

  • Both came in 2019 (obviously).
  • Both teams during that playoff run nearly got eliminated. The Raptors in game 7 semi-finals. The Nats in the wild card game.
  • Heading into the season or start of the playoffs, both teams weren’t favorites to win it all.
  • Both teams knocked out a heavily favorite team multiple times. Raptors for Bucks and Warriors (heading into the series). Nats for Dodgers and Astros.
  • Both were franchises that were at one point located in Canada.
  • Both teams played their first championship of their respective sport.
  • Both teams did poorly at home during the Finals.
  • Both of the franchises that the team defeated in 2019 would win it all in 2022. The Warriors and Astros. By coincidence, their 2022 opponents shared the same division as the Raptors (Atlantic) and Nats (NL East).
  • Both had made the playoffs for most of the mid-2010s decade but just couldn’t get over the hump.
  • Both had a star level player leave their team in some way/shape/form (Derozan & Bryce Harper) and won the following year after leaving.
  • Both teams received a player that essentially got them over the hump (Kawhi & Patrick Corbin & Anthony Rendon). Both of those players either fell off or left in free agency.
  • Neither team saw noticeable playoff success since winning the title. Raptors got to 2nd round in 2020 while Nats have not made the playoffs since.
  • Neither team has any of its remaining players still on that roster.
  • Both of the remaining star players of that team in their primes were traded and for fairly cheap (Siakam and Juan Soto).

Which team do you think had the bigger collapse 5 years later? Any other subtle coincidences?
