A lot of people on the internet are clowning on Embiid for playing for the US instead of his birth country, Cameroon. I think this is really unfair. He’s lived in the US since high school, learned the game here, started a wildly successful career here, and started a family here. Cameroon barely cares about basketball and didn’t even qualify for the competition. If he was offered a chance to represent the country—that created so many opportunities for him and his family—in playing at the highest level of international stage, as well as play along side gaurenteed first ballot hall of famers, why would he say no? To criticize a fully legitimate citizen for playing for his country because he’s “not from here” is very ignorant and xenophobic. I’m definitely not the most patriotic person in the country but America is a land of immigrants and a bunch of different races, and I think the criticism he’s getting is beyond basketball and just dumb.
