Watching the highlights from the WNBA all-star game last night, it seems both teams were taking the game seriously and considerable defense was being played. Why don’t we see this kind of defense and competitiveness in the NBA all-star game?

    Olympians vs Olympic snubs

Just USA vs World wouldn’t do it. You have to put a pissed off Jalen Brown at small forward surrounded by Luka/SGA/Giannis/Jokic with like Ja off the bench against Lebron and friends.

For the same reason the select team vs team USA scrimmages are more interesting than the ASH

Because everyone is soooo lovey-dovey in the NBA now, it’s not like back in the day when players from rival teams hated each other

In this case the thread was actually NBA related so your weak hate doesn’t even apply

The only person who tries in ASGs is Giannis, no iteration of the game is gonna get intense. Might as well go the Pro-Bowl route and think up some events around the game

I don’t know but the game was good.

Angel Reese is a beast and Clark throws a nice pass.

Was cool to see them beat the creaky women on Team USA.

It irks me they can’t bother to give effort in the all star game under the excuse of risking injury but you’ll see half of them lace up for the drew league or some other pro am pickup game in the off season.

Exactly. And it’s basketball. You can hurt your knee in practice, but you need to practice, so you practice. Injury avoidance taken to the extreme is just a detriment to the player’s experience. Playing a hard fought all-star game would presumably be great practice for any player, having the chance to compete against the top talent in the league. Why squander it because you might tweak an ankle? Plus you can injure yourself dicking around in an all-star game just as you can playing hard in one. I get there are risks, but risk associated with one game is simply quite low.

Team USA roster wanted to get as much practice in as possible before heading to the Olympics. They were playing defense and running sets against a group that is most likely the most talent they’ll face.

The all stars roster either saw it as an audition for the Olympic roster (Angel said that), or had some beef with the selection committee (Arike), so extra motivation.

It’s crazy seeing the competitiveness of the all star games up until probably the early 2010s compared to now.Its just a glorified shoot around now

Because defense and fundamentals stopped being a thing in the NBA over a decade ago with the rule changes. Sadly, stopped being a thing in regular games as well - not just all star.
