The Lakers/Spurs rivalry b/w the Tim Duncan Spurs and Kobe Lakers are cited as one of the best rivalries of the 2000s, but looking back at the match-ups, I’m surprised by how lopsided they were compared to the Kings/Lakers or later Lebron/Celtics series.

  1. 1999 - Lakers get swept
  2. 2001 - Spurs get swept
  3. 2002 - Spurs get gentlemen swept
  4. 2003 - Spurs win 4-2
  5. 2004 - Lakers win 4-2
  6. 2008 - Spurs get gentlemen swept

Of these, only two years had some degree of competition based on the end result. Is this a case of the results not telling the whole story or was the rivalry more out of the match-ups than the quality of said series?
