I’m curious if anyone has the stats on how many total medals were earned by each country. And I don’t mean total event medals where USA has 126, China has 91, etc. I mean total medals brought back home by all athletes who participated.

In sports like basketball where USA won, it got more than one gold since it had 12 athletes and received 12 gold medals in total. In the 4x400 relay, 4 people earned a gold, but the alternates who ran in prelims got golds too. So how many total medals did countries bring back home? I’d assume some countries “total medal count” using this calculation can easy rise 2-6x.

I saw the number of “minted” medals several weeks ago as over 5000. Honestly that seemed low for number of events and competitors in events. Do coaches or others get medals?

Coaches don’t afaik. But it can add up very quickly. The Netherlands won 2 golden medals in hockey which is 16 players per team so 32 total. For just 2 wins.
      There’s many examples like that.

I do understand why they didn’t make the medals 100% gold lol
